Personality & Traits
General Overview | Jean Grey is a mutant with vast empathic and telepathic abilities that were traumatically awakened during childhood when she witnessed her best friend's death. When Xavier opened a school for mutants, Jean Grey was enrolled as a student of his first class. As Marvel Girl, she became one of the original X-Men. Jean is host to the Phoenix Force, a cosmic elemental whose eternal purpose is to burn and cleanse all that it deems obsolete. | |
Mutant Power(s) | Telepathy (4): Jean is able to perceive the thoughts of others or project her own thoughts into other people's minds. Jean's psionic powers enable her to manipulate the minds of others, warp perceptions, project mental illusions, cause loss of particular memories, and induce pain or temporary mental and/or physical paralysis. Within close range, she can manipulate a finite number of minds to perform simple feats. She is able to project mind 'bolts' composed of psychic energy, enabling her to stun the mind of another person into unconsciousness, inflict mental trauma, or even cause death. Jean can project her astral form into a psychic dimension known as the Astral Plane. There, she can use her powers to create objects and control her surroundings. Jean is a powerful empath thanks to her telepathy, she can feel and manipulate the emotions of other people. Jean can also connect people's minds to the feelings of others. Telekinesis (4) : Jean possesses a high-level of telekinetic ability that enables her to psionically levitate and rapidly move objects. She can use her telekinetic abilities on herself or others to simulate the power of flight or levitation, create protective force fields out of psychokinetic energy, or project her telekinetic energy as purely concussive force. The outer limits of her telekinetic power have never been clearly established, though she has been capable of lifting approximately fifty tons of rubble with strain. Phoenix Force (1): The Phoenix Force manifests itself around Jean in the form of a bird made of cosmic flames. The size of the bird and the intensity of the fire varies with the amount of energy being used. Cosmic fire can even manifest in seemingly impossible situations, such as the vacuum of space or underwater, it does not require oxygen to burn. |

Origin Story | Jean Grey was born the youngest of two daughters to John and Elaine Grey. Her father is a professor at Bard College History Department in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Jean had a normal childhood in a small, liberal college town. Until one day, while playing with her friend Annie Richardson, Jean witnessed Annie being struck by a car. The high emotional stress of the accident caused Jean's mutant powers to manifest well before she reached pre-pubescence. This sudden surge in telepathic power linked Jean with her friend, which caused her to experience Annie's death firsthand. Jean was so traumatized by this event that she slipped into a semi-catatonic state. When Jean reached age eleven, a psychiatrist referred her parents to Professor Charles Xavier, an expert on mutation, specializing in telepathy. Following the psychiatrist's advice, the Grey's brought their young daughter to Professor Xavier's mansion in Westchester County. After his initial analysis, he informed Jean that she was a mutant. The Professor recommended she stay in Salem to attend Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Here she would learn to harness the massive psionic power dwelling within her. Unbeknownst to John and Elaine, this would also be her first step to becoming a founding member of Professor Xavier's X-Men. |

Past Exploits | When Xavier felt that Jean had reached a mastery over her telekinetic powers, she became the fifth member of the X-Men where Jean adopted the code-name 'Marvel Girl.' The team actively fought against other mutants who threatened their founder and mentor's ideals. As time went by, the team's relationship grew tighter, and they came to think of themselves as family. The original X-Men remained together, saving the world for many years, and they became renowned for their exploits. Despite romantic interest from Angel, Jean fell in love with her fellow teammate Cyclops. Due to timidity on both sides, the pair were slow to show their affection for one another. Cyclops was perhaps more apprehensive due to his mutant power's destructive nature and its potential danger to anyone who got remotely close to him, especially Jean. Eventually, however, the two revealed how much they cared for each other. During a failed mission to Krakoa the Living Island, Jean sacrificed herself to save Cyclops, allowing him to escape within the Blackbird. As Krakoa's vegetation attempted to consume her, Jean found herself capable of tapping into a new and unknown power. This power allowed her to burn and destroy Krakoa's plant life in the immediate vicinity. Exhausted from this outburst of power, Jean later awoke as a captive. While abducted Jean underwent mental and physical torture in an attempt to once again active the same novel power she had used to burn Krakoa. Cyclops later rescued Jean from her imprisonment in Krakoa. The people and reasons behind her capture and torture remain unknown other than the novel power occasional expressed by Jean is called the Phoenix Force. |
