Freedom Force is defeated with the leader revealed as Mystique who impersonated Captain America. Just when Cyclops breaks cover and unveils Mystique, a Prime Sentinel attack commences. Cyclops engages Omega Sentinel to prevent him from harming anyone else while the X-Men get the protesters to safety. The Human Torch and the Thing from the Fantastic Four show up to assist and cover the mutant retreat, ending in a Nova Flame by Human Torch which incinerated the Prime Sentinels and destroyed the bridge. The X-Men fought their way inside the Citadel and found Zaladane and Belasco having a confrontation. Lorna was strapped to an ancient device which used her power to manipulate the primary portal. Bobby arrived first and challenged Belasco, though he only managed to slow him down. Zaladane destroyed the machine which sent Belasco back to Limbo but dragged Lorna with him. The geomagnetic disturbances ceased, which restored Magneto to full power who summarily executed Zaladane. He raised the Citadel into orbit and annexed it to Asteroid M. The X-Men were brought to Asteroid M along with it but quickly kicked off due to disagreeable personalities. Scott's marriage to Aurora is annulled and they take up residence at the Baxter Building.

8 September 1990 - The United Tribes launch an assault against the Temple of the Sun in order to undermine Zaladane's claim as empress. After destroying the statue of Garokk at the Temple of the Sun, the essence of Belasco, Ruler of Limbo, was released.

The remaining United Tribes rally at Skull Mountain.

1 September 1990 - The X-Men split up in the Savage Land, with one group being led by Ka-Zar to rescue Bliss from the Swamp Men while Shanna and Zabu lead the other group to Skull Mountain where Magneto awaits any survivors of the battle. Bliss is interrogated by Zaladane's forces and given over to the Swamp Men.

31 August 1990 - The Brotherhood transport ferrying the X-Men crashes in the Savage Land, interrupting a battle between Zaladane's army of Sun People and Swamp Men who had besieged a village of the Fall People and one of the last bastions of the United Tribes. The X-Men join the battle with Ka-Zar, Zabu, and Shanna the She-Devil after a weakened Magneto flees to his former stronghold of Skull Mountain. Although ultimately successful in routing the superior numbers, Bliss is captured in battle.

30 August 1990 - Magneto comes to the X-Mansion in a semi-depowered state asking for assistance. The source of the geomagnetic disturbances is the Savage Land within Antarctica. Someone has reactivated his former Citadel there and is using a weapon he had devised to bring the world to its knees. His gradual loss of power is a side effect. He has requested the X-Men's aid in bringing it down because he does not wish to appear weak before the Brotherhood or the denizens of Asteroid M. Professor Xavier agrees to send the X-Men with him in exchange for handing Rev. William Stryker over to human authorities. Scott Summers tracks down the Telford "The Vanisher" Porter through the aid of Jessica Jones of Alias Investigations and secures his help in getting to the island of Krakoa. When the X-Men arrive at McMurdo Station on the edge of Antarctica, they encounter a Savage Land Mutate who had slain most of the researchers there. They activate the satellite array to push through the radiation in the area, allowing the Brotherhood transport ship to enter the heart of the Savage Land, but not before a powered-up Zaladane appears and warns them to turn back.

Stryker's plan is to connect a device to the massive draw of the power station in order to connect Professor Xavier's mind to it and broadcast a death pulse to all mutants within range of the nascent mobile network and potentially beyond. The Phoenix Academy mutates, Ethan/Gryphon's former team, are on hand to halt the X-Men's progress, but they are defeated. Stryker attempts to flee and prepares to turn himself in to law enforcement when Maestro and Quicksilver of the Brotherhood abduct him in order to prosecute him in the Court of Avalon on Asteroid M in the name of mutant justice. The X-Men nearly overcome the Brotherhood, but Magneto's intervention halts them and Stryker is taken.

The Professor plans a covert mission to acquire incriminating evidence against Stryker and his Purifiers.
