Overview
The Mutant Underground is a decentralized community of mutants who work, live, or otherwise operate outside the confines of normal society. While the official definition is broad enough to include notable groups such as the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and the X-Men themselves, its standard use is usually in reference to lesser known and significantly more disenfranchised factions outside the mainstream mutant community. These groups often live on the fringes of society, fighting for survival and freedom in a world that fears and persecutes them.
Morlocks
Leader: Warren Worthington III (former: Callisto)
The Morlocks are a group of mutants who live in the tunnels and sewers beneath New York City. Their namesake is taken from the subterranean creatures in H.G. Wells' novel "The Time Machine," and they lived up to the name in their first encounter with the X-Men. In the end, Angel of the X-Men defeated their leader Callisto in single combat and won the right to rule. Callisto was allowed to continue leading in a regent role under the new regime. They suffered a brutal massacre by unknown marauders in January of 1990, although a small remnant continues to dwell there.
Fallen Angels
Leaders: Tyrone Johnson, Tandy Bowen (former: Telford Porter)
The group is initially formed by the reformed mutant criminal Telford "The Vanisher" Porter, who gathered various young mutants and outcasts to engage in petty crimes and survive on the streets of East Harlem. As a result, they often operate in the gray area between right and wrong, using their powers for survival and personal gain while trying to find their place in the world. After Vanisher perishes in aiding the rescue of Jean Grey from Krakoa, the Fallen Angels receive new benefactors in X-Factor Investigations as Jean Grey and Scott Summers. Elder members of the group inherit Porter's meager assets and continue their established community as originally founded. They were attacked by Sentinels in October of 1990 which leveled the entire city block. Rebuilding commenced immediately but was hampered by a lack of resources and civic support.
