Episode 5: Days of Fortune Past
Location: Danger Room
Timeline: November 23rd, 1990
Drew had arrived in the Danger Room at a quarter to four. He knew he was early for meeting Jennifer, but he wanted to get some stretching in prior to the gymnastics training beginning. He was finishing up the stretches and starting a few warmup exercises when Jennifer arrived. He looked up her from his front leaning rest position as he knocked out a series of push up. "Hey there Jennifer."
"Hey, Drew," Jennifer said with a smile. She was dressed to workout in shorts, t-shirt, and sneakers. "It looks like you already started warming up?"
Drew nodded his head. Jennifer may have had a small frame, but it was quite evident that she was quite fit. Athletic, but a distinctive feminine appearance as well. "Just loosening up the muscles a bit." He glanced away to refocus on his exercises. "You should probably do the same."
"I know," Jennifer said. She seemed like she was about to say something else but she reconsidered. She started to stretch instead. "I've been looking forward to this."
Drew's eyes darted up to meet hers. Her words were as welcome as they were surprising. He gave Jennifer a shy smile. "I have too." He tried to stay focused on her face, but it was impossible to not notice how beautiful she was, even more beautiful than Peyton back home. Peyton, who had asked him to the Sadie Hawkins Dance and then had told him to never contact her again after he was outed as a mutant in the news. Drew resumed his warm up exercises as Jennifer continued her stretches.
Jennifer didn't stretch for too long. Just some basics. She turned to Drew, wondering what he was thinking. She didn't know anything about this Peyton girl. "How do you feel?" she asked him,
"Ready to get started any time you are." He looked Jennifer in the face. It was becoming more difficult with each moment to not check out her bare arms and legs. "So what did you have in mind to show me first?"
"Let's start with seeing where we are," she said. "What can you do?"
Drew scratched his chin and shrugged. "I have track and field training, so a little high jumping and long jumping, but I never trained for tumbling or cartwheels or anything acrobaticy. Perhaps you can show me something simple and I can try and copy it."
"I get to see you first," she teased. "I mean, I do need to see where we are first. So let's see your high jump."
Drew nodded. Jennifer's wanting to access his general athleticism was understandable. He crouched down, took a few deep breaths and did a stationary leap of 3.18 meters, or a little over 10 feet 5 inches, he took a short 10 meter run and leap that reached 3.8 meters (12' 5"). He turned and walked back over to Jennifer. "How's that?"
"That was actually really good," Jennifer said. "You have strong legs. Now, watch me closely." Jennifer paused. She was trying to remember first learning some of this stuff. She had no experience teaching. "Just watch closely," she repeated. Then she did a cartwheel. It came easily and effortlessly to her.
Drew watched Jennifer execute the cartwheel flawlessly. She was graceful, beautiful and quite simply...amazing. He looked at her in awe. "Wow!" He took a deep breath and tried the move himself and ended up flat on his back. He laughed at his own clumsiness. "You make it look so easy."
Jennifer offered him a hand up. "You kind of have to to do it all. You need to fully commit to the motion. If you overthink it, it doesn't really come off right."
Drew nodded as he took Jennifer's hand and got back to his feet. He worked with Jennifer for an hour learning cartwheels, back flips and forward tumbling rolls. He glanced at Jennifer as the training session was coming to a close. "So how did I do?"
"Pretty good," Jennifer said. "How do you feel?"
Drew took a deep breath and smiled. He felt quite relaxed despite the intense workout. He was a quick learner due in no small part to his abilities. "I feel pretty good and I had a fantastic teacher."
"I don't really know how to teach," Jennifer admitted insecurely.
"You did great. Watch." Drew executed a short series cartwheels, back flips, a leap and mid air twist, finishing up with a couple of forward tumbling rolls. He glanced at Jennifer. "I couldn't do any of this an hour ago. Now I can."
Jennifer grinned as she watched him. "Well, I had a good student."
Drew looked back at her. He realized he had promised to take her to dinner and a slight blush crept on his face as he looked at his warm. "Um, it's five o'clock now. I promised you dinner at a restaurant for the lesson. How long do you need to get ready?"
Jennifer gave the question a moment’s thought. "Give me an hour." She turned and walked out of the Danger Room with a smile on her face. She hoped Drew was as kind and sweet as he appeared to be.
